Do you worry about your loved one looking up to princess characters in the 'classic' princess fairy tales?

Then this message is for you.

Hi, I'm John. I am a dad that wanted more empowering princess stories and messages for my then 2 ½ year old princess obsessed daughter. I admit that at first, I thought her princess obsession was cute, but as I read the stories as a parent, I become concerned.

And I think there is reason to be concerned...

  • Research shows that young kid’s beliefs about their abilities and potential are influenced by the characters they look up to in books and other media
  • A research study specifically about Disney princesses, showed that more interactions with the princesses (Disney) predicted more female gender-stereotypical behavior a year later.
  • Gendered behavior can become problematic if girls avoid important learning experiences that aren’t perceived as feminine or believe their opportunities in life are different as women

“We know that girls who strongly adhere to female gender stereotypes feel like they can’t do some things. They’re not as confident that they can do well in math and science. They don’t like getting dirty, so they’re less likely to try and experiment with things.”

Dr. Sarah M. Coyne - professor, School of Family Life- BYU (lead author of the study referenced)

Princesses (in the Disney tales) avoid female bonding. Their goals are to be saved by a prince, get married, and be taken care of the rest of their lives.”

Peggy Orenstein, Author: Cinderella Ate My Daughter

After ad-libbing the stories for a while with things like, 'and then Cinderella studied science!', we developed positive and empowering versions of 'classic' princess stories and the other tools in this toolkit. These fun and inspiring stories include examples and messages about self-confidence, growth mindset, resilience, and empathy. The tool kit was developed to help amazing people like you, leverage your superpowers to change the association with princesses to brain power, self-confidence, empathy, and resilience.
